The song of the year songwriting contest has one winner from each of the ten songwriting categories.
The next highest ranked placement is the Finalist placement. There are four Finalist placements in each contest.

Other placements include Semi-Finalists, Runner-Ups and Honorable Mention placements. Considering
there are ten songwriting categories, there are fifty Honorable Mentions total in each competition.

Honorable Mention placing songwriters are ranked among the top writers (within the top 1-2%) of the entries in the songwriting contest.

  1 Winner per category
  4 Finalists per category
  5 Semi-Finalists per category
  5 Runner Ups per category
  5 Honorable Mentions per category

  * Suggested Artists - This is a placement given to a writer when the judges do not score the song high enough to receive any of the other placements but the Song of the Year staff personally liked the song. The song would also have had to be in the top 5% of the judges' scoring to receive this placement. Since the placement is based on the Song of the Year staff's favorite songs (and must also be in the judges' top 5%), there is no specific number of placements given in any specific contest. Historically there has been anywhere between 3-7 songwriters who receive this placement in each contest but this can vary from contest to contest. There have been contests where no one received this placement.

98%-99% of the songwriters who enter the contest do not recieve any placement at all. Only the top writers receive a placement in the competition.
